How to Choose a Kids Tennis Coach in London

What to look for when picking a coach, whether to choose group or private lessons, and the questions worth asking first.

Choosing a tennis coach for your child can feel like a guessing game, especially if you have never played yourself. The good news is that you do not need to understand the technical side of the game to spot a good coach. The things that matter most are easy to observe.

Group or private lessons?

For most children starting out, small group sessions are the better choice. They are more affordable, more social, and the bit of friendly competition keeps things fun. Private lessons come into their own later, when a child is committed and wants to work on specific parts of their game. There is no rush to pay for one-to-one coaching early on.

Questions worth asking

Before booking a block of lessons, it is worth asking a coach a few straightforward questions: How many children are in each group? Are sessions grouped by age or ability? What happens if we miss a session? Do you offer a trial? A coach who answers these clearly and without fuss is usually one who has thought about how they run things.

Watch a session if you can

If a coach offers a free trial or lets you watch a session, take them up on it. You will learn more in twenty minutes of watching than in any amount of reading. Look for a coach who keeps children moving, gives plenty of encouragement, and manages the group calmly. Whether your child is smiling tells you most of what you need to know.

Location and consistency

Finally, be realistic about logistics. The best coach in the city is no use if the courts are an hour away and you end up cancelling half the time. A good local coach you can get to easily, week in and week out, will almost always serve your child better than a big name across town.
